Galerie Cité

Founded in 2014, Galerie Cité has transformed La Cité Francophone’s cultural centre into

a vibrant space dedicated to visual arts. Through exhibitions, workshops, and events,

it fosters dialogue between artists and the community.

Evolution from October 6th to December 20th, 2025

The Devenir collective

Devenir is Alberta's first collective of professional visual artists working in French. The group brings together these five artists, all dedicated to mutual support and creative exchange. United by a common mission, members meet weekly to exchange ideas on individual and collective projects, fostering a spirit of collaboration that enriches each artist's practice.

Since its conception, the collective has exhibited extensively throughout Alberta and beyond, with notable presentations at the Salmon Arm Arts Centre, L’Alliance Française de Calgary, au CAVA (le Centre d'Art Visuel de l’Alberta) in Edmonton, and the Trex exhibition at the Galerie d'Art de Grand-Prairie. The group's activities encompass individual studio work, group artistic initiatives and professional development.

Every two years, they come together to create a new artistic installation, pushing back the boundaries of their personal artistic practices. The collectif Devenir’s mission is to foster creativity through collaboration, while promoting francophone culture and artistic innovation in Alberta. Evolution is an exhibition that illustrates the individual and collective evolution of these five francophone artists over the course of almost a decade. Through shared experiences and experimentation and numerous exhibitions, they have enriched the diversity of their work.

Doris Charest

Nature has always been my greatest source of inspiration. Growing up  in the countryside, I developed a deep awareness of the small changes around me: the changing light, the growth of plants and   the movement of the wind.

These subtle details shape the way I see and interpret the world in my paintings.  Through my work, I invite to pause, observe and appreciate the beauty of nature.  I want people to recognise its fragility and understand the importance of protecting it. My aim as an artist is

to remind others that life, in all its forms, is precious

and deserves to be cherished.

Karen Blanchet

Karen's exposure to poverty from the age of twelve made her keenly aware of the plight of others. Her involvement with the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Development and Peace-Caritas Canada has given her a better understanding of the widening gap between rich and poor and the abuses committed on our beautiful planet Earth.

Based in Edmonton since 2011, she focuses on educating others through her paintings, installations and poetry. A founding member of Devenir, DDK and Duo, she enjoys the dynamics of working in tandem with other artists as well as the more traditional solo model. Her studio/gallery, located in her backyard, is open to the public by appointment only.

Her installation The Keepers, created during a residency at KOAC, is currently touring public galleries in Western Canada.

Sabine Lecorre-Moore

Sabine Lecorre-Moore is a Franco-Albertan visual artist based in Calgary-Mohkinstsis. Originally from France, she graduated from a school of decorative arts in Brussels.

Living in Alberta since 1991, she spent twenty years creating commissioned works of art for private clients. Since 2010, her work has focused on personal artistic explorations, notably through a series of large-scale abstract works.

Inspired by the Buddhist wheel of life, her works use watercolour to represent the cycle of time in our lives, inviting contemplation. Sabine regularly participates in solo and group exhibitions, exploring themes of transformation and meditation through abstract art.

Virginie Rainville

Originally from Quebec, Virginie moved her family to Edmonton in 2013. After completing her post-secondary studies in presentation design and multimedia creation, she quickly decided to become a multidisciplinary and versatile artist. She works in various fields of applied arts, such as the design and production of themed decors, murals and various artistic displays.

Virginie is passionate about the visual and emotional impact that artworks, decors and collaborative community projects have on people.

The different textures, lights, salvaged building materials, colours and a wide range of materials and techniques allow her to explore an infinite world of surprises, magic and, above all, reflection. With a broad social perspective, she focuses her observations on communities, exchanges, the unspoken and, the lack of understanding of past and present realities that surround us.

History

In 2014, Galerie Cité started thanks to the Edmonton Heritage Council’s Living Local grant program, the Edmonton Arts Council, and the Federation of Community Leagues. Our project partners were La Cité francophone and the Bonnie Doon Community League. Together, we transformed the public space of the French Cultural Centre into a public art gallery offering workshops and events to the community.  The Galerie Cité project provided unique opportunities for participants to explore the history of the area through visual art exhibitions, workshops and events.

Today, Galerie Cité provides a forum for continued visual artistic expression, dialogue and relationship building between Francophone artists, curators, and the greater culture within Edmonton. Galerie Cité strives to continue to develop new partnerships and to build on relationships with Artist, The Works Art & Design Festival, Rubaboo and Dreamspeakers Festivals.
